Ali (Science)I have started a new adventure at Sexsmith Secondary in the 2014-2015 school year. Previously I taught at SRRA for the past 12 years. Originally I was hired to teach high school math and physical education. I started teaching high school biology in 2005. My passion and focus in teaching is getting students to be engaged in their learning. If students are engaged in class, they want to be there and therefore are more excited to learn. Through the Biology Coach position I have been working with biology teachers in the school division to develop a workbook to prepare biology 30 students for the diploma, more hands on activities to teach concepts for Biology 20/30, and creating new projects to help give the biology 20/30 curriculum a deeper meaning to students. I have enjoyed working with Peace Wapiti teachers and am excited to continue working with them in the future.

Cathe (Language Arts)I've been teaching since 1991 - 5 years in Peru - and the remaining here in PWSD at Sexsmith Secondary. Although my focus has been Physical Education, a year spent teaching special education opened my eyes to the many different ways students learn. As a result, I moved in language arts and now teach 7th and 9th grade LA. Knowing how to read well is so important for every person and helping the students that struggle with it has become my passion. Currently I am working with the Advancing Adolescent Reading Initiative out of the University of Alberta to help share with students and other teachers ways to not only become better readers, but to also enjoy the process. As an AISI coach, I've had the privilege to work with some great teachers in our district.

Farouq (Math)I have been a Math teacher for 13 years (11 of them for PWSD) and have had the opportunity to challenge students (and parents!) on the myth that mathematical ability is innate and unchangeable. I have been involved in a few roles with the district, such as Science AISI Coordinator (AISI was the Alberta Initiative for School Improvement which provided funds for schools to enhance teaching and improve student learning) and as a Physics Learning Coach. I am now excited to be part of the effort to coordinate professional development for Math teachers in the division and look forward to seeing improvement in student learning.

Karin (Social Studies)I’ve been a teacher (on and off) for the past thirteen years. I started my career outside of PWSD teaching a combination of Social Studies and English. After I had my daughter in 2007, I spend the next few years taking time off and subbing. Once I was ready to return to full time teaching, I was lucky enough to secure a position at Peace Wapiti Academy. It is here that I have been able to focus almost exclusively on my subject passion, Social Studies. I have really appreciated being a teacher in this district, as I have been fortunate enough to work with some truly fantastic people. As the Social Studies Coordinator, I look forward to further developing relationships and enhancing learning throughout our district.
