Young Spirit River students provide hope to Kenyan orphans! |
Spirit River Regional Academy’s Grade 2 students were recently given a glimpse of the impact they have made on orphaned and abandoned children at Hope Homes International in Eldoret, Kenya. In an effort to encourage global citizenship in her classroom last year, Anna Shura, a Grade 1 teacher at Spirit River Regional Academy, used picture books to help the young students think beyond themselves and realize how they can impact their home, their community and the world by helping others. The students and teacher settled on a fundraising goal of just over one hundred dollars to “gift a goat” to the orphanage and established a donation bucket within the school. The school generated additional funds by selling hot dogs. At final tally, the students discovered they had raised a total of one thousand dollars. With the extra funds, the class purchased two cows named Saidie and SRRA – the latter an abbreviation of their school’s name – to provide milk to the orphanage, as well as some chickens and a goat.
